Resolute Happenings: 2020 Highlights
Words can’t describe 2020, so we won’t try. Instead, we’d like to share some Resolute highlights from the year to give you an overview of what’s been happening across the portfolio.
The headline is that it has been an especially exciting year for the Resolute family. We’ve made 11 new investments backing teams and visions we have fallen in love with! And a number of our earlier portfolio companies have bounced back from the first Covid wave to have transformative years. Notwithstanding the hardship so many around the globe are now enduring, we still feel it is important to celebrate good news when it comes. And we are very pleased to be sharing some great news from across the Resolute portfolios. Starting with two founders we have worked with since before the creation of Resolute.
Matt and Eric do us proud!
When we started Resolute, we were lucky to snag two exceptional founders (and equally exceptional human beings) to be founding Resolute Venture Partners. Matt Meeker worked closely with Mike running Dogpatch Labs NYC. Mike also became close with Eric Wu, backing his startup Movity in 2010, and working only a few feet away from Eric and team in Dogpatch SF (Raanan was another 30 feet or so away, as an executive at Automattic and key Resolute Advisor). Matt and Eric both were key pillars in the formative days of Resolute, playing a vital role in helping coalesce a super vibrant and connected founder community. The collective spirit they helped to take root in those early days has emerged as perhaps the most important attribute of Resolute today.
Fast forward: Matt starts Bark & Co, Eric starts Opendoor. Resolute backs both.
Fast forward a bit more: both companies are going public! In September 2020, Opendoor announced a merger with the Chamath Palihapitya-led SPAC Social Capital Hedosophia II, with a valuation of $4.8 billion. And in December, Bark announced a $1.5 billion deal to go public via a SPAC led by Jonathan Ledecky and Joanna Coles.
Needless to say we are incredibly proud of our two Venture Partners and deeply grateful to have them as core members of the Resolute Family. With regard to both Matt and Eric, the moral of the story, for us, is that sometimes the good guys/gals do finish first!
